Herb Garden Project

Matthew made a new retaining wall out of all the old bricks he found behind our garage. He took out the cement block path that went from the driveway along the south side of our garage to the gate in the back fence along the alley. The path was a couple of feet out from the garage, and between it and the garage, there was a clump of rhubarb and a bunch of weeds. Last summer, he kept his potted herbs there (on top of the weeds). Here's Maegan helping with the digging for the new and improved herb garden:
Here's the master gardener with the (almost) finished product:

The path blocks aren't re-positioned yet to curve around the brick wall. I think the rest is done, though. Matthew could only fit 10 bags of top soil in the trunk at a time. Luckily, Ace Hardware is just down the road. After the first 10 bags, it looked like we'd need about 10 more, and then it looked like maybe 10 more, and then...well, you get the idea. Forty-three 40 lb bags later, there was enough dirt.

The rhubarb is a green variety (that's right, the stalks don't have a red color to them at all) and was re-located from its old spot just below and to the left of the garage window to the middle of the new bed. Matthew added the trellis and a purple clematis plant, lavender, oregano, sage, chives, thyme, rosemary, and tarragon.
